Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is an organic solvent widely used in the chemical industry, and its storage is key to ensuring its safety and stability.
Storage container:
THF should be stored in a sealed container to prevent it from volatilizing and reacting with oxygen in the air to form peroxides. Common storage containers include glass bottles, stainless steel containers, and special polymer containers. Make sure that the storage container has sufficient strength and corrosion resistance to prevent THF leakage and container rupture.
Storage temperature:
THF storage temperature should be controlled within an appropriate range. Generally speaking, it is safe to store THF at room temperature (20-25°C). Excessively high temperatures may cause THF volatilization and pressure increase, increasing the risk of leakage and explosion. Therefore, when storing THF, avoid exposing it to high temperature environments, such as places exposed to direct sunlight or near heating equipment.
Avoid contact with oxidants and acidic substances:
THF should be kept away from oxidants and acidic substances to prevent dangerous chemical reactions. Contact between THF and oxidants (such as hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, etc.) may cause fire or explosion. In addition, THF should also avoid contact with acidic substances (such as concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated hydrochloric acid, etc.) to avoid violent chemical reactions.
Prevent light:
THF should be stored in a light-proof environment to prevent it from being affected by light. Long-term light exposure may trigger the decomposition reaction of THF, resulting in the production of harmful substances. Therefore, when storing THF, dark storage containers should be selected and placed in a dark storage area.
Avoid mixed storage:
THF should be stored separately from other substances to avoid contact with incompatible substances. Contact with certain substances (such as oxidants, strong acids, ferric chloride, etc.) may trigger dangerous chemical reactions, leading to fire, explosion or release of toxic gases. Therefore, when storing THF, it should be stored separately from other chemicals and managed in different areas according to classification.
Labeling and classification:
THF storage containers should clearly identify their contents and be classified and stored in accordance with relevant regulations. The chemical name of THF, hazard identification and related safety tips should be marked on the storage container. In addition, THF may be classified as a flammable liquid or hazardous material according to local regulations, so it should be classified and stored in accordance with the corresponding regulations.
Regular inspection and maintenance:
Regularly check the integrity and sealing of the storage container to ensure that there is no leakage or damage. If any abnormality is found, such as leakage, discoloration, odor, etc., measures should be taken immediately to repair or replace the storage container.
